RFID reader

Functionality of RFID readers

RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) is the contactless exchange of data between an RFID tag and an RFID reader/writer. For data transmission, the RFID reader/writer creates a magnetic or electromagnetic field that supplies the passive RFID tag with energy.

As long as the RFID tag is in the electromagnetic field of the RFID read/write device, it is supplied with energy and data can be exchanged. There does not need to be any direct contact or line of sight between the reader and RFID tag. The RFID tag can be read by all electrically non-conductive materials. Information can be read from the RFID tag chip, but can also be stored on it.
RFID readers can be classified according to various criteria. Often according to location, reading range, power supply, frequency range, application and mobility. In the following, the criterion of mobility is used to present specific characteristics for mobile, stationary and semi-stationary use.

  • Handheld RFID reader

Handheld RFID readers are mobile, functional and handy RFID readers. They do not require a permanent power connection as they store data temporarily and only transmit it to a host system later. Data is transferred via Wi-Fi or by plugging it into the docking station.

The most common areas of application are:
    • Warehouse management (periodic stocktaking)
    • Storage/retrieval/shrinkage control
    • Omni-channel order processing
    • Inventory management and article search
    • Picking
  • RFID gate reader

In an RFID gate reader, the RFID tags attached to a product are detected as they pass through the RFID gate. Opposite pairs of antennas enable communication between the RFID tag and the RFID antenna. RFID gates are used when objects need to be identified automatically. The bulk detection application enables almost complete and error-free detection of the tagged objects.

    Application areas:

    • Libraries
    • Trade
    • Visitor identification at events
    • Theft protection
    • Timekeeping at sporting events
    • Manufacturing industry
    • Transport and logistics
  • RFID desktop readers

RFID desktop readers are inexpensive RFID readers that are available in all common RFID technologies. They can be used to read and write RFID tags. They can be connected to a PC via USB as well as to a COM interface, i.e. a serial interface.

    Fields of application:

    • Point of sale (at cash registers)
    • Reception areas
    • Dispensing points
    • Document tracking
    • Access control
    • Transponder programming station
    • Intelligent shelves and displays
    • Intelligent inventory management
    • E-banking
    • Internet security
    • Software protection
    • Telecommunications
  • Passive NFC tags can be used to tag almost any object, giving them "intelligence" and access to the Internet. Everyday objects are beginning to communicate with each other via the internet thanks to NFC technology. NFC technology is what makes IoT, mobile payment and smart homes possible, and NFC-compatible end devices (smartphones and tablets) can be used to quickly and easily read the data stored on the NFC tag and trigger further actions. The NFC chip technologies can be integrated into all product groups in the smart-TEC portfolio. All you have to do is hold your smartphone or tablet with activated NFC functionality up to the NFC chip and you are immediately taken to a mobile website - without having to download an app.
