Statement on the term "climate neutral"07.08.2024

smart-TEC explains its position on the discussions surrounding the use of the term "climate neutral".

The discussion surrounding the term "climate neutral" in connection with products or companies continues to be very much in focus. There is increasing criticism of companies that describe themselves as "climate neutral".

Despite our extensive commitment, it is essential that the debate surrounding the term "climate neutrality" continues to be taken seriously and critically scrutinized. We understand and respect the need for this ongoing discussion and are actively involved in reviewing our own measures, striving to continuously improve data quality and implementing measures to achieve the reduction targets we have set ourselves.

smart-TEC and RATHGEBER have long been active as pioneers in environmental and climate protection, have been recording their corporate carbon footprint (all CO₂-equivalent emissions are shown here) every year since 2009 and have been climate-neutral since 2010.

How is the CCF calculated at smart-TEC?

We take this challenge very seriously and therefore take into account all emission sources currently relevant to us and all three scopes from the outset. We always strive to act transparently and authentically and adhere to the highest standards of emissions measurement and reduction.

The three scopes defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol form the basis for calculating our emissions. The allocation to the respective emission sources can be seen in the graphic in the header (also available as a download on the right). Despite our many years of experience, we are constantly working to improve the quality of our data. We are currently working with the external service provider ClimatePartner to balance our emissions.

How are emissions avoided/reduced? How does smart-TEC work with the CCF result?

The first step is to balance the emissions and classify them into Scope 1, 2 and 3. The next step is to avoid emissions based on the data determined there. For example, the installation of our industrial heat pumps at our Mindelheim site.

If avoidance is not possible, reduction measures are taken, such as changing materials or improving the efficiency of newly invested machinery.

We set ourselves reduction targets for emissions in order to keep our sights set on a goal. Scope 1 and 2 emissions are to be reduced by at least 49% by 2025 and Scope 3 emissions by around 19% by 2028.

Emissions that we were unable to avoid are offset voluntarily by purchasing official certificates and promoting climate protection projects at a global level.

What is smart-TEC's position on the discussions regarding the creation of uniform standards?

We are convinced that the discussions surrounding the topic of climate neutrality are necessary and will only subside once binding standards provide consumers with the necessary guidance, transparency and certainty, uniform calculation methods and emission factors exist and it is no longer possible to exclude relevant emission sources.

We very much welcome this development and look forward to taking the next clear step to further strengthen our credibility and trust in our environmental commitments.
