Lifting tackle and their application areas

Lifting tackle, as ropes, chains, lifting straps or round slings are called comprehensively by specialists, can be applied variously. They are being used in industry, e.g. for lifting and unloading or for load handling purposes. But we also find personal protective equipment within the event or sports fields.
Lifting tackle has to be flawless as far as its quality or function is concerned and it has to be continuously tested and maintained, because it´s safety first when we are talking about human lives.

If you are staying or even working at great heights, you need to be able to blindly rely on your gear. Climbing parks or high rope courses that are becoming more and more popular pay particular attention on their guests´ safety and also the construction of wind turbines requires absolute safety and precision.
At a level of 100 up to 200 meters above the earth, the workplace sways to and for and there´s always a moderate or even strong wind. In spite of these adverse conditions, full concentration is required. Frequently, the assemblers are hanging in a merely light harness, on a rope – both being part of the personal protective equipment, or briefly, PPE.

Yet of something is to reliably protect you, it needs to be properly kept and maintained. The professional association defines rules for testing lifting tackle. Additionally, EU-Directives have to abided by and an exact documentation is required. A visual check has to be carried out each time prior to using the device. In addition to that, we have to bear in mind the total service time and instructing the workers about the handling of the PPE. The administration effort is enormous, consumes a lot of time and incurs costs. That´s where the RFID-technology by smart-TEC comes on stage offering inventory functions or safety and material test services.

How does the RFID-technology integration work?

If you hold an RFID-Reader next to an RFID-Transponder, irrespective of the type, the worldwide unique ID of the integrated chip (TID) is being read out. Consequently, any piece of equipment becomes unique and the results of the annually prescribed safety check can be recorded individually. On the one hand, legal rules are being kept to, on the other hand, the safety level is increased. Also the error sources are minimized as the serial number is digitally transmitted and not recorded manually any more. Another advantage that´s not to be underestimated is that we need less time. In order to be able to provide such a service to the client, a special app can be provided.

The company from the South German region of Allgäu manufactures innovative climbing harnesses and safety belts that are used in industry, in adventure parks or on climbing courses. Thanks to the RFID-Technology by smart-TEC, the EDELRID products are being led to the next generation. The EDELRID protection helmet is equipped with the smart-DOME Classic. This chip has been integrated into high-quality, soft PU to be protected against mechanical impacts, temperature or weather effects. Additionally, this RFID transponder convinces thanks to its customized design.

Textile RFID-solutions

Within the area of ropes, EDELRID has been relying on self-adhesive labels by RATHGEBER, the smart-TEC mother company and these labels are wrapped around the rope end. RFID transponders can also be directly sown into textile harness or be additionally attached with cable ties. That´s where the smart-DOME Freestyle production series and the smart-DOME cable ties appear on stage because – apart from a high ruggedness - these products enable various options for attaching the device. That´s practical if you need to additionally equip already existing products with RFID technology. Mountain rescue services can thus additionally attach the RFID technology to their climbing harness with a cable tie.

The Upper Austrian company has developed the innovative LiSA LIFE-SAFETY-SYSTEM for its PPE-products. Thanks to the LiSA Online Plattform and their LiSA-App, the users can always check in an uncomplicated manner whether their PPE is approved for the purpose in question and they can easily manage this via their PC or smartphone. At the same time, they thus comply with their legal documentation duties – and do not need a single sheet of paper.

The core of the LiSA-System is the NFC-Transponder by smart-TEC developed especially based upon Haberkorn requirements. Longevity, tear-resistance, weight, robustness, individual company imprint, brand communication, intelligence and flexibility figured among the fundamental requirements defined by Haberkorn regarding the NFC-Transponder. Finally, there´s now a high-quality trade-mark logo at the end of a development process finely tuned out with the client and this logo provides an integrated NFC-functionality, the logo can be sown in and it fulfills all the requirements defined by Haberkorn.

"It was important to us to establish an open platform that works well also when being used outside," Christopher Koch, Haberkorn

The SpanSet GmbH & Co. KG from the German town of Übach-Palenberg uses the latest IT-technology for its innovative Electronic Product Identification and Administration System EPIS (Abbreviation of the German wording “Elektronisches ProduktIdentifikations- und VerwaltungsSystem“). The EPIS´ core is an RFID-chip by smart-TEC which can be integrated into all cargo securing products, lifting securing products or fall protection products. Apart from that, equipping sling chains or sling ropes as well as many products outside the scope of the actual SpanSet product portfolio with this technology additionally or for the first time becomes possible.

Any and all safety-relevant data are stored on a passive RFID-transponder within the 13.56 MHz frequency range which is attached on the product. The chip integrated into the RFID transponder stores product data, information regarding maintenance and the product lifecycle.

Reading out, programming or modifying chip data is carried out in a contact-free manner and without any visual contact using a mobile and a robust IP 65 protection class RFID-reader-writer. As the SpanSet made products face extreme conditions such as extreme weather or temperatures as well as high mechanic stress, also the demands regarding the integrated RFID transponders´ resistance are high.

The RFID transponders developed by smart-TEC in cooperation with SpanSet specialists operate within a temperature range from -25 C° until +75 C° and thanks to special protection materials, they are extremely resistant against mechanic loads. Fall tests or folding tests, pressing the material into a prism or even a hexbar-test prove that the smart-DOME Freestyle product series RFID-transponder is highly resistant.

Apart from the inventory service related advantages or the advantages related to storage or to the retrieval of goods, EPIS provides a great additional value in planning, organizing and documenting the so-called UVV-tests which are usually to be carried out annually and refer to personal protective equipment, round slings, lifting straps, lashing straps, load-bearing devices and other products.
