Innovative RFID project launched for tree labeling in the city of Köthen

10.04.2024
Together with smart-TEC and Kompetenzteam GIS GmbH, the city of Köthen has implemented a pioneering tree identification project. The aim: to make the care and pruning of trees more efficient.

Oberhaching, April 2024

An RFID transponder from the smart-DOME Industrial series was screwed onto every tree in the city of Köthen at a height of around 3 meters. The use of RFID technology is intended to provide a detailed overview of the treatment, care and pruning of the trees

The RFID transponders from the smart-DOME range are read using a special RFID reader, which enables the responsible landscape managers from the city of Köthen to obtain important information about the condition and needs of the trees. Thanks to the identification using RFID technology and the ability to read data on the move, tree care activities can be controlled in a more targeted manner and the tree population can be better monitored.

The smart-DOME Industrial is printed according to the specifications of the city of Köthen: with a 2D code, a logo and a serial number. A transparent polyurethane layer over the printed image protects the printed image from scratching and fading. The smart-DOME Industrial is characterized by its very high temperature and weather resistance. It has been developed for the toughest conditions, such as heat, cold, mud and dirt, and can be attached to almost any surface. The design also allows different types of attachment. It can be glued, riveted or attached to a wide variety of objects and machines with cable ties. All these advantages and properties were of the utmost importance for the successful implementation of the project.

Time savings and efficiency through digital labeling

A key element of this project is the integration of geographic information systems (GIS) to ensure a comprehensive overview of the tree population. The precise spatial mapping and documentation of each tree using GIS technology enables urban planners, arborists and environmentalists to make informed decisions and take targeted measures to maintain and improve urban greenery.

The municipal GIS system GMSC-K, managed by the company Kompetenzteam GIS GmbH, enables those responsible to manage a wide range of information about each tree, including location, species, health status and necessary maintenance measures. By analyzing this data, preventative measures can be taken and resources used more efficiently to extend the life of trees and preserve the beauty and vitality of urban greenery.

The project will continue over the next 3-4 years. The plan is to screw up to 10,000 RFID transponders to trees in Köthen.
