Pipe Marking

Unique identification in accordance with DIN 2403 and IEC 61406 - supplemented by NFC or a QR code - ensures safety, transparency, and lays the foundation for efficient maintenance.

Clear Labeling for Efficient Maintenance Based on the Digital Twin

For efficient maintenance work, all piping in a plant must be uniquely identifiable. The process industry, the globally applicable standard IEC 61406 was developed for this purpose. This is a globally unique, machine-readable ID that is affixed to a physical object - similar to a nameplate or label.

This makes it easy to identify pipelines. In the future, mobile devices could recognize the pipelines within a plant or along the supply chain and provide production staff directly on-site with relevant information such as maintenance schedules or location data.

Pipe Marking According to DIN 2403

The clear labeling of fittings, piping, and containers is essential for a clear and safe workflow, as the chemicals used may be irritating, harmful to health, corrosive, hazardous to the environment, or highly flammable. Pipe markings are subject to legal standards - the pipe arrows indicate the substance flowing through the pipe and the direction of flow. This ensures that, in the event of an emergency or during routine maintenance, all personnel involved can orient themselves and take appropriate action.

The most important criteria for pipeline markings in a company are not only consistency in the markings but also compliance with legal regulations. For this reason, piping in all facilities should be marked with signs in accordance with DIN 2403, as these not only differ in color depending on the substance flowing through them but also include the substance’s name and the specified markings (and, in some cases, the corresponding hazard symbol) for that substance, as well as indicate the direction of flow with an arrow. This pipe labeling in accordance with DIN 2403 not only helps prevent accidents and health hazards but also contributes effectively to firefighting efforts. These pipeline markings and labels should be affixed in a clearly visible manner at the beginning, end, and at operationally critical points along the pipelines; these may include, for example, cylinders and/or valves.

Automatic Identification of Pipelines

The pipeline can be identified using NFC tags or QR codes. These technologies enable data to be captured, stored, and retrieved electronically. Linking this data to a unique ID is crucial for ensuring smooth maintenance and management processes. NFC and QR codes facilitate a seamless connection between physical objects and digital systems. This promotes accuracy, efficiency, and traceability in equipment management and is a significant step toward the comprehensive digitization of operational processes.
