Labeling of Functional Locations & Equipment
Smart labeling solutions for functional locations (FLOC) and equipment using NFC, RFID, BLE, and 2D codes form the basis for efficient maintenance, mobile access to information, and end-to-end digitization.

Efficient Maintenance Through Unique Identification
For efficient maintenance, all functional locations in a plant must be uniquely identifiable. To develop a globally applicable standard for this purpose, numerous companies from the process industry. The result is the so-called IEC 61406. This is a globally unique, machine-readable ID that is affixed to a physical object—similar to a nameplate or label.
This makes it easy to identify technical locations. In the future, mobile devices could recognize technical locations within a plant or along the supply chain and provide production employees directly on-site with relevant information such as maintenance schedules or location data. What are technical locations?
A functional location is an organizational unit in logistics that structures a company’s assets requiring maintenance according to functional, process-oriented, or spatial criteria. It represents the location for maintenance activities and enables the division of plant areas for the integration of equipment. Functional locations are defined according to functional, process-oriented, or spatial criteria, such as wastewater treatment plants. Each functional location has an individual master record in the Plant Maintenance component that includes location data, partner information, and hierarchy levels.
What is meant by “equipment”?
Equipment is a physical object that requires independent maintenance and may be installed in technical systems. It encompasses various types of objects, such as production equipment, transportation equipment, measuring instruments, and much more.
Unique identification is essential for a clear and safe workflow, as the chemicals used may be irritating, harmful to health, corrosive, hazardous to the environment, or highly flammable. Unambiguous identification supports the transition to digitalization and is an important step toward the efficient management of equipment.

Automatic Identification of Technical Locations and Equipment
Automatic identification technologies such as NFC tags, QR codes, or 2D codes enable the unique identification of technical locations and equipment. When used in conjunction with mobile devices such as smartphones, they lay the foundation for the digitization of maintenance and management processes. This allows technical data to be electronically recorded, stored, and retrieved, and enables maintenance activities, histories, and workflows to be efficiently documented and tracked.
Linking physical objects to a unique digital ID increases accuracy, efficiency, and transparency in plant and equipment management. Hierarchical structures of technical locations and 3D visualizations of production facilities further support the digital mapping of operational functions and facilitate access to additional information.
